From the latest 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to tomorrow's all-electric and advanced hybrid vehicles that will help propel the America of the future, Toyota is all about pushing themselves and the entire automotive industry toward greener, more ecologically-friendly solutions for issues like climate change. Recently, Toyota took another huge step in that direction, announcing that Toyota Motor North America will partner with heavy equipment maker Hino Trucks to develop the next generation of all-electric fuel cell heavy trucks like we see hauling freight on the highways of America every day.

Like many of Toyota's hybrid, electric and fuel-cell technologies, Toyota hopes that their partnership with Hino Trucks to build heavy-duty 18-wheeler fuel cell trucks will both help the freight companies facing rising fuel costs and help push America and the world toward better solutions to moving long-haul freight.

The plan is to retrofit Hino Trucks' new Hino XL Series heavy truck chassis with a version of Toyota's already-proven fuel cell technology. The result will be incredible torque, reliability and energy efficiency without the emission of greenhouse gases. Toyota and Hino Trucks hope to have a prototype ready for testing and demonstration by the first half of 2021.

“A fuel cell powered version of the Hino XL Series is a win-win for both customers and the community. It will be quiet, smooth and powerful while emitting nothing but water,” said Tak Yokoo, senior executive engineer with Toyota Research and Development. “Toyota’s twenty plus years of fuel cell technology combined with Hino’s heavy-duty truck experience will create an innovative and capable product.”

“Expanding upon our proud heritage of the Hino powertrain, Toyota fuel cell technology offers our customers a commercially viable, extended range, zero emissions vehicle in the near term,” said Glenn Ellis, Hino’s Senior Vice President Customer Experience. “Hino shares a common focus with Toyota when it comes to durability, reliability, and innovation with the customer at the center of design which makes this collaboration a game changer.”

At Toyota, the future is truly now, and the eco-friendly innovations that are sure to come from the recently-announced partnership between Hino Trucks and Toyota Motors North America is sure to make sure our shared future is bright, green and efficient. Outside-the-box thinking and cutting edge tech like that can be found in every vehicle Toyota makes, from the compact 2021 Toyota Corolla to tomorrow's biggest long-haul fuel-cell trucks.
